Turpin v. Charlotte Latin Schools, Inc.

Summary

The court held that the complaint adequately pleaded claims for breach of contract, fraud, unfair and deceptive trade practices, and defamation under North Carolina’s liberal notice-pleading standard. It reversed the Court of Appeals in part because the complaint alleged that the school used contractual grounds as a pretext, falsely promised there would be no retaliation or blowback, and falsely attributed racist statements to the plaintiffs. The court affirmed dismissal of the negligent-misrepresentation claim and dismissed review of certain other claims as improvidently allowed.
