Summary

The court held that defendant's challenge to her forgery-by-making conviction was not moot because the conviction could have collateral consequences and affected the integrity of the judicial process. It construed the forgery statute to distinguish creating a counterfeit check from endorsing an otherwise valid check, and concluded that defendant's endorsement did not constitute making the already-counterfeit check. Because the evidence did not establish that defendant created the check, the court reversed that conviction, barred retrial, and modified the sentencing order to reflect only the remaining attempted-theft conviction.
